These personal finance resources bring together useful guides, applications, books and official Canadian tools that can help you manage your money and invest with greater confidence.
Some recommendations may contain referral or affiliate links. If you use one of these links, I may receive compensation at no additional cost to you. A referral relationship does not determine whether a resource is included or how it is described. You can read the full Legal and Disclaimers page for more information.
Personal finance resources by topic
If you are still building your financial foundation, start with Personal Finance and Investing in Canada. It provides a guided path through budgeting, emergency savings, registered accounts and investing.
When an unfamiliar financial term appears, consult the Canadian Financial Glossary. It explains common banking, credit, tax and investing terms in plain language.
Investing platforms and online brokers
The right brokerage depends on the accounts you need, the investments you intend to hold, the fees you may pay and how much assistance you expect.
The Best Online Brokers in Canada comparison examines several Canadian platforms using consistent criteria, including account availability, trading costs, currency-conversion costs, investment options and ease of use.
Referral offers may be available for some platforms. They are clearly disclosed and do not change the comparison criteria.
Apps and financial tools
Financial applications can help you monitor spending, check your credit, automate saving or manage investments. A useful tool should solve a specific problem without making your financial system unnecessarily complicated.
The Apps & Tools page will contain selected resources organized by purpose, along with their costs, limitations and the situations in which they may be useful.
Recommended books
A good financial book should provide ideas that remain useful after the latest market forecast or investment trend has disappeared.
The Recommended Books page will organize books by subject, including personal finance, investing, financial behaviour and decision-making. Each recommendation will explain who the book is for, what it does well and any limitations Canadian readers should understand.
Official Canadian resources
For tax rules, financial regulations and government programs, consult the original Canadian source whenever possible.
- Financial tools and calculators — Government of Canada: budgeting, debt-repayment, mortgage, banking and retirement tools.
- Savings and pension plans — Canada Revenue Agency: official information about TFSAs, RRSPs, FHSAs, RESPs and other registered plans.
- Office of the Investor — Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization: information about investing, risk, fraud prevention, regulated firms and investor protection.
- Statistics, tools and calculators — Bank of Canada: inflation, investment and currency tools.
Official sources can be technical, but they should take priority when contribution limits, eligibility requirements, tax rules or regulatory information may have changed.
How resources are selected
A resource does not appear here simply because it offers a referral program.
When evaluating a tool, platform or book, I consider:
- Whether it addresses a real financial need
- Whether its costs and limitations are reasonably clear
- Whether it is relevant to Canadians
- Whether the provider appears trustworthy and appropriately regulated
- Whether the resource encourages informed, sustainable financial decisions
- Whether I have used it personally or reviewed it closely enough to describe it fairly
No application, platform or book is appropriate for everyone. Compare alternatives and consider your own needs before signing up, purchasing a product or making an investment decision.
A resource library that will continue to grow
